Uses of totalitarianism and demagogy in the split of the Radical Civic Union (1955-1957)

Abstract
This work investigates the public speeches that preceded the split of the Radical Civic Union, finally consummated in 1957 after a prolonged process of internal division. As is known, while the Intransigent Radical Civic Union, led by Arturo Frondizi, deepened its appeal to the Peronist electorate and its criticism of the ruling “Revolución Libertadora,” the People's Radical Civic Union increased its support for the military regime and accused his rivals of being influenced by totalitarian ideas and demagogic practices. In the reconstruction of this debate between September 1955 and March 1957 -in the graphic press and the journal of sessions of the National Advisory Board- the aim is to show notions of both party factions, along with others from the non-Peronist spectrum, about the people, democracy and deposed Peronism that anticipated the tensions and central elements of the constitutional order reopened in 1958.
